Marcus Johnson


I’m not sure what to think about this article, but I saw Marcus Johnson play at Twins Jazz down on U Street (by far my favorite jazz venue in DC – the space is intimate, the admission prices reasonable, and the style of jazz tends more frequently to be my preferred style) and he was absolutely amazing.

The piano is far from being my favorite jazz instrument, but that article gets it right about his solos stopping everybody in wonder.

When I saw him, he was had never played with the rest of the quartet – he was filling in, as it were. But he slipped right in and read his bandmates beautifully and when he started his solo, the other musicians could only stand awe-inspired.

Not sure what I think about this wine thing, though.

A Canticle For Leibowitz


I bought this book a while ago (I’m not sure exactly how long ago, but the restaurant receipt that I was using for a book mark was dated to January, 2012) but just finished it today.

Because I am a bit of a sci fi and fantasy junkie, it would probably surprise a lot of folks that I went so long without finishing this widely acknowledged classic of twentieth century science fiction. I first remember encountering this book (though not beginning to read it at the time) at the Dunedin Public Library. At that time, there was no widely available internet with no top ten or top one hundred lists floating ’round it. Knowledge of the books one ought to read were passed around by word of mouth like samizdats.

Canticle is a compelling book, despite lacking a consistent cast of characters on account of covering more than a millenium’s worth of future human history. In short, after a devastating nuclear war that cost humankind almost all of our scientific knowledge, a small monastery keeps alive the memory of the non-canonized Saint Leibowitz, who was apparently a scientist working on a nuclear weapons program who, after the ‘Great Fire,’ went out to try to keep scientific knowledge alive.

Well, he eventually gets canonized and the Order of Leibowitz becomes both a spiritual and technological center for mankind. Later, as science is rediscovered and advances, the Order becomes an advocate for moderating scientific advancement with wisdom.

Throughout, the Order’s role as a Catholic institution is respected (by the author, I mean) and sometimes, it appears that Saint Leibowitz himself is still walking the earth in some form, keeping an eye on us. Other events which might be miracles (the author does not allow for it to be known definitively) occur, as well.

Anyway. It’s a great freaking book. Should have read it years ago.

Zima Junction


Once a month, Capitol Hill Books hosts ‘First Saturdays,’ setting out wine (chardonnay and merlot), cheese, and crackers and giving customers ten percent off. The other week, I went in to browse about and maybe use the last three dollars of store credit remaining on the index card with my name on it that the owner kept under the counter.

What I bought was an old copy (1963) of Yevtushenko: Selected Poems (I can’t imagine this volume from the old Penguin Modern European Poets series, is still in print). One of the great experiences of my high school years was getting to hear Yevgeny Yevtushenko read in front of a sadly thin crowd at the University of South Florida. He was as enthusiastic and ebullient as one would expect of a Russian poet (Russian novelists may be thought of as a little taciturn, but I think Pushkin set the more extravagant tone for what the expectations are for one of that country’s poets).

So I was prompted by the good memories of seeing and hearing him read, as well as a price that was just $1 more than more store credit (and the owner actually just scratched out the last of my store credit and said he’d just call it even). There was also an inscription inside the book and I always like finding one of those inside a nice used book.

This intro to this book is rather oddly lukewarm towards Yevtushenko’s poetry. But it comes from a time when poets could still be notable figures, when books were a larger portion of the national discourse, and when a knowledge of the ‘enemy’s’ culture was considered important. Consequently, a poetry collect about which one might have mixed feelings was still felt to be worth publishing and commenting on.

The centerpiece of the book is a long poem entitled Zima Junction. It’s about a Moscow based poet returning home to the community in Siberia where he grew up.

Firstly, as a historical document, it’s a reminder that Soviet-era Russia was not so monolithically oppressive as conservative fire brands might have wanted us to believe (check out Gao Xinjiang’s Soul Mountain for a similarly eye opening look at China).

But also, it’s about the college kid from the small town coming back. While he hasn’t been gone long, those years of early adulthood are very formative, so he’s caught between the worlds of Moscow literary culture and the rituals and rhythms of rural Siberia. The narrator is shown off to family, taken to events believed befitting an educated local boy done good, and fed great quantities of home cooked food to compensate for the presumed failings of the capital’s kitchens. The wistfulness of the poem is exactly right and fully captures that feeling of ‘you can’t go home again’ (and in just twenty odd pages, as compared to voluminous text required by hypothetical other writers one might name). The spare language captures elegantly those rhythms and rituals, I mentioned, and by capturing them through an eye that is both distant from and familiar with them, the detail and distance is just right from the reader who is not from Siberia, but does know the feeling of coming back to a place one used to belong to (but doesn’t anymore).

So if all you know of Yevtushenko is Babi Yar from the choral section of Shostakovic’s 13th, than Zima Junction is a good way to see another, less political side.

The Post-Christian, Post-Modern Right


The contemporary, American conservative movement and the GOP are fundamentally post-modern and post-Christian. The contemporary left remains (and this might be a flaw) an essentially modern project – or perhaps it is better say that the contemporary left is an effort to complete (an) unfinished project of modernism.

The key for American conservatives is Jean-François Lyotard’s concept of ‘legitimation.’

Science, rational thought, and, yes, facts, are no longer sufficient. Legitimacy is no longer something determined by knowledge, but something malleable, changing, and able to brokered and manipulated for subjective purposes.

When George W. Bush the candidate was asked in a debate about global climate change, his response was: don’t scientists disagree about that?

Of course, the ‘legitimate’ answer in the modern(ist) sense is no, no the overwhelming majority of scientists working in the relevant fields do not.

Since the field in which the modern Republican politician operates is not the field of knowledge or facts, but legitimation. A few oil company paid scientists manage to produce something which sort of kind of suggests maybe not, then climate change can be de-legitimized. Which is the point: not to ascertain truth (which is a modernist goal) but rather to legitimize or de-legimitize aspects of the world in support of one’s goals.

Ultimately, Christianity and religious authority, becomes something for this post-modern gaming of legitimacy – with the tendency of many American conservatives to speak (preach) in religious terms is just another part of the legitimation game.

When Paul Ryan creates a budget (which also plays legitimation games with math, but not using it, but questioning the legitimacy of criticism of the lack math by asserting his own legitimacy as ‘taking entitlements seriously,’ even though pre-post-modern thought would have pretty quickly dismissed any budget that gets such things as addition and subtraction wrong as being fundamentally not serious) that the Catholic Church (of which he is a member) criticizes as being immoral, he attacks the legitimacy of their argument. He takes a minor theological idea known as subsidiarity and uses that to de-legimitize the criticisms of bishops, priests and nuns (which are based on a far more central and basic social argument within the Catholic Church – the preferntial option for the poor).

The Church, to put it mildly, is not a democracy. Untrained lay figures like Ryan should not have any ground to stand on here, at least not theologically. But by appealing to the post-modern idea of legitimation, Ryan makes an appeal for the religious and Catholic rightness of his budget through (pseudo) intellectual games that are post-Catholic and post-Christian. Because legitimacy ceases to be something relatively absolute, something determined by scientifically accepted facts or even by religion’s eternal truths. For the Catholic Ryan, even the truths of the church can be gamed through efforts to de-legitimize the unwelcome positions held by the Church or written out in the Bible.
